Fair Trade Ginger NAPCL's factory was built as part of an EU funded development project and opened in 1998. The project has been very successful in establishing self help groups of farmers, to promote the growth of fresh vegetables in particular. It also established an experimental fruit-processing factory, to add value to local produce. This is located in Kerala's pineapple growing area and employs about 60 people. It is a public limited company, with 70% of the shares owned by local farmers, the other 30% by the Government of Kerala.
