The contents of this set have been made in the village of Kallupatti, Tamil Nadu, South India, by local people working at Reaching the Unreached (RTU) a rural development charity helping the very poor, particularly women and children.

RTU was founded in 1975 by Brother James Kimpton, a lay brother of the De La Salle teaching order. Starting from a desire to meet the needs of abandoned or orphaned children, RTU now has a team of Indian staff trying to help the poorest people at the grass roots level in all the many small villages around their base.

RTU in the UK was begun in 1982 by a small group of friends of Brother James, inspired by his dedicated approach and lifetime of commitment. He uses his skills to enable the most needy - children, adults and the elderly - to find dignity within their own community.

Buying this product directly supports the poorest of the poor by providing employment. The RTU handloom unit has the capacity to employ many more people and jobs are needed. This district is one the poorest in India.

RTU is almost entirely supported by donations from people in countries outside India with supporters in the UK providing the major part of the funding.
