Fairtrade Oven Baked Cashew Nuts and Peanuts. Natural (no added salt).
Liberation is the result of many years of work by two of the best known names in Fairtrade - Twin Trading and Equal Exchange. These organisations, which each have long histories of working with small scale farmers in the developing world, helped set up Cafedirect and other successful enterprises with the goal of encouraging development through trade.
Work with nut farmers and gatherers started in the 1980s, helping to build knowledge and organisations. In 2005 the first Fairtrade certified nuts were brought to the UK. Then a business plan was established for Liberation, in consultation with the producers who were to become joint owners of the project. Finally in 2007 Liberation Foods CIC was established.
Without being part of a co-operative of farmers and being Fairtrade certified; individual smallholder farmers face huge challenges. They can be caught in a poverty trap, attempting to cope without enough money and without a way of making positive changes to their lives. These problems can include having to make long journeys to sell their nuts and to get clean water, taking precious time away from working their land; little knowledge about good farming practices and marketing their nuts; poor health and little access to healthcare; and no access to export markets. By grouping together into co-operatives the farmers have access to information, training, knowledge, processing equipment and transport which they wouldnt have if they carried on working their small plot of land by themselves. This all helps them to improve their farm and improve their lives. Being part of a co-operative also means farmers have more power, choice and influence.
