Basil is widely used in Mediterranean countries, especially in Genoa , Italy, to make Pesto, although originally native to India.

Several other basils, including some other Ocimum species, are grown in many regions of Asia. Most of the Asian basils have a clove-like flavour that is generally stronger than the Mediterranean basils. The most notable is the holy basil or tulsi, a revered home-grown plant in India, and used in many dishes, such as Thai curries.

Basil contains a powerful essential oil that has antispasmodic and antiseptic properties. It also good for the nervous system and digestive complaints.

Use fresh basil to make pesto (combined with olive oil, pine nuts and parmesan), or add dried to any number of tomato/vegetable dishes and soups.
